May 19, 1887: "The work of constructing a lighthouse at Point Sur, Thirty miles south of Monterey, will be commenced either the latter part of this week or the first of next. The engineers and workmen will be under the charge of Engineer W.P. Smith." (Daily Alta California)
August 18, 1887: "Work is still being pushed on as rapidly as possible at the new Point Sur Lighthouse. The engine, to be used in operating the cable by which the cars will be run up and down the tramway, arrived last week, and was hoisted, piece by piece, to the top of the rock, where it is now being put in place.
